International competitions could be heading to Moray following the approval of a multi-million pound sports centre.
The new complex will be home to a sports hall which can host gymnastics, trampoline and basketball clubs.
Conference rooms have also been included as well as outdoor facilities including football pitches, tennis courts and a running track.
The charity behind the project, the Moray Sports Foundation, has already secured £2million for the development, which could cost up to £12million.
However, yesterday chief executive Kathryn Evans revealed the building’s name could be taken over by a sponsor to add further financial backing.
She added: “Getting planning permission for the sports centre will open the doors to new funding opportunities.
“It will also allow us to firm up some funding bids that have waiting for us to get approval.”
Support for the project is being made up of funding bids and fundraising.
Moray MSP Richard Lochhead added: “Having been involved in the campaign for improved sports facilities locally for a number of years, I’m well aware of the excitement around the project and how this will transform leisure in Moray.
“Clearly the decision to give this project the green light is a huge step forward in making the dream of state of the art sports facilities in Moray a reality.”
