A specially-trained sniffer dog has joined the battle against drug abuse in Moray.
Five-year-old Buster mingled with the crowds of people hitting the streets of Elgin to visit pubs and clubs throughout the community this week.
But, while receiving affectionate attention from many of the punters, the springer spaniel was also on the scent for illicit substances.
Customers waiting outside premises were given the once-over by Buster, who was accompanied by handlers.
And police have now revealed the specialist dog’s involvement led to two revellers being arrested.
An 18-year-old man was charged with possessing cannabis and a 24-year-old man was charged with behaving in a threatening and abusive manner.
Buster has previously been used to detect people carrying drugs at train stations and major events across the north-east while also joining officers on raids.
The operation in Elgin town centre came just days after police revealed they had seized nearly £40,000 worth of drugs destined for Moray’s streets.
A total of 16 people were charged, following more than 30 raids in Elgin, Buckie, Keith, Cullen, Forres, Lossiemouth and Burghead, between April and June.
Constable Rachael Devenney, from the Elgin community policing team, explained that resources from across the region would continue to be used in targeted efforts to smash drug rings in the region.
She said: “A similar operation was carried out in April and proved successful at stopping controlled substances from getting into pubs and clubs of Elgin.
“We are committed to working with our partners and communities to ensure that people can enjoy what Elgin has to offer in a safe environment.
“The operation last weekend was positively received by the licensed premises and revellers who were pleased to engage with their local officers.”
