A Moray family has received a boost of more than £2,000 from cyclists who were moved by their life-saving mission.
Ian Walker and Shaun Kerr, who work as surveyors for Moray Council, cycled 236 miles in less than a day in support of Gordon and Sandra McKandie, whose son Keiran died in March 2016 after being hit by a car when cycling.
Now it has been revealed that the duo raised £2,100 during their bike ride from Ardnamurchan lighthouse on the west coast to Boddam lighthouse, which is the most easterly point of Scotland.
The cyclists were moved by the death of the teenager and decided to put together the coast-to-coast challenge on what would have been his 18th birthday.
The donation will allow the McKandie family to buy another two defibrillators in memory of their son.
Mrs McKandie said: “It’s a fantastic donation. Obviously it’s a difficult time for us. They’ve gone out of their way to do that so we’re just very grateful.
“It’s going to allow us to buy defibrillators which can make a real difference.”
Meanwhile, a fundraising ceilidh has been organised for later in the month to celebrate Keiran’s passion for traditional dancing.
Mrs McKandie added: “He was really proud to be Scottish so we really wanted to find a way to celebrate that.”
The ceilidh will take place on Saturday, January 27 at the Mansefield Hotel in Elgin at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £25, including stovies, and can be booked by e-mailing keiranslegacy@outlook.com
