A Speyside community organisation fears ambitious plans to expand its village hall could be put in jeopardy without more help from locals.

The Craigellachie Village Council has already had plans to build an extension at the venue approved as it looks to create more space for events.

And the group has now embarked on a fundraising drive in order to raise the £100,000 needed to fulfil its vision.

The success of the project, however, will rely upon support from the wider community.

A recruitment drive has been launched ahead of the group’s annual meeting this week.

Chairwoman Jane Tweedie said: “We’ve got a really good working committee but there are not many people beyond that at the moment.

“Whenever we need people to turn out to support events, they always do, but there’s a lot of work needing done between times.

“To make the extension a reality, we really needing people who are experienced in filling out funding applications. We’ve identified some funds but need help to apply for them.”

Practical assistance is also needed by the group to put up Christmas decorations in the community as well as doing some painting.

The village hall regularly hosts events through the year, including the popular whisky auction which raised more than £47,000 this year.

Meanwhile, the community group funds the electric bill to light up the iconic bridge over the River Spey, which is photographed by visitors to the area from across the world.

Storage facilities are also being created as part of the hall extension, which will allow tables and chairs currently stockpiled in the building to be moved out to create more space.

Group secretary Brenda Cooper added: “Communities seem to be getting asked to do more and more within their own communities and Craigellachie is no different.

“We just want people to come on board and help us out, even if it’s just helping to keep our website and social media updated.”

Craigellachie Village Council’s annual meeting will be held at the village hall on Thursday from 7.30pm.
