Whisky, westies and walking will bring festival-goers together at Speyside festival

It’s a festival of Scotch, but there is much more than just the country’s national drink on the menu at a major new event.

A range of new activities for the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival has just been released by organisers.

In “the most varied programme ever seen”, the five-day celebration of Scotland’s iconic tipple will be inspired by the great outdoors.

In addition to whisky-themed golf outings and trail runs, one of the more unusual events on itinerary is Secrets of Spynie, which combines walking and canoeing.

During the event, participants will be able to learn about the 1,500-year history of the Laich of Moray, where much of the barley used in local whisky is grown, as they explore by both foot and voyageur canoe.

Craigellachie Bridge

Visitors can also enjoy a dram against the backdrop of one of Speyside’s most photographed attractions – Craigellachie Bridge.

John Dewar & Sons, which operates the nearby Craigellachie Distillery, will be hosting Scottish Aperitivo hour at the iconic landmark on May 4 and 5 at 6pm.

Dog lovers will also get the chance to take part in a challenge to find Rebel, the missing Murray McDavid dog.

The treasure hunt with a twist will take place on May 5, and task visitors with finding 10 wee Westies which have wandered off into the Speyside countryside.

Participants will get a map of where the dogs were last spotted – and win a bottle of whisky from Murray McDavid if they win.

Festival chairman James Campbell is excited to see the festival continue to grow.

Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival James Campbell said: “With over 660 events on the Festival programme, this year is the biggest on record.

“It is also the most varied programme that I have ever seen, with some very imaginative and innovative activities planned.

“If anyone thought that the only thing to do at a whisky festival was to enjoy a dram or visit a distillery, this year’s programme completely dispels that perception.

“The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival is very much about having fun while creating great memories – and these events will certainly deliver.”

The festival takes place in locations across the region  from May 1 to 6.
