Recycling collections to be suspended in Moray due to virus

Collections of recycling bins from households in Moray have been suspended due to concerns about coronavirus.

Pick-ups were disrupted last week with streets being missed out due to crews being short-staffed.

Now Moray Council has announced that paper, plastic, metal and glass collections will be halted from today due to the amount of staff in isolation.

Personnel numbers in each vehicle have also been reduced to comply with social distancing rules.

General waste and garden waste bins will continue to be collected as normal with households being urged to store rubbish to be recycled until it is able to be picked up.

The local authority said suspending recycling collections was deemed as having to least impact while allowing staff to focus on “critical” services.

Waste manager Mike Neary said: “We know that reducing recycling collections will be disruptive to households and we apologise for this.

“We have a duty of care, to colleagues and residents, to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and we must make sure we can continue to provide services in the safest way possible.

“Please do not place recyclables into your green bin as these will end up in landfill. If you can, bag or box any extra recycling materials you have and store these until recycling collections resume.

“We’ll restore a full service as soon as we can, and will collect excess.”
