One of the last survivors of Moray’s summer event calendar has now been called off due to the pandemic.
Elgin had been due to host its first Highland Games since 2004 next month, with organisers promising a line-up crafted to attract people with varied interests from across the community.
However, now the committee made the decision to cancel the event – while promising the games would still return next year.
A statement read: “Unfortunately the decision has had to be made to cancel the first Elgin Highland Games.
“We put it off for as long as possible but in the end it was the only option we were left with. On a brighter note, we have set July 11 for next year.
“Once restrictions have been lifted to allow a meeting we shall hold one where anyone with an interest in getting involved in the organising of the games will be welcome to attend.”
Highland Games due to be held at Gordon Castle in Fochabers last month were cancelled due to the pandemic, with forthcoming events across the north-east and north also axed due to public health guidelines.
Organisers of the returning Elgin games, who are predominantly members of the local tug o’ war team, have moved the venue from the previous Morriston playing fields to Cooper Park in the hope of attracting a larger crowd on the day.
