Extinction Rebellion protesters staged demonstrations in Inverness and Moray today as they took aim at banks and financial institutions.

A 20-strong group dropped four 30ft banners bearing anti-fossil fuel slogans over the Ness Bridge at midday and talked to passers-by about the reasons for their protest.

Gary Jack of XR Inverness said the group demands banks set detailed timelines for their withdrawal of funding from fossil fuel industries to meet the requirements of the UN Paris Agreement.

“We want banks to divest from the destruction of the planet and increase investment in sustainable renewable energy,” he said.

“We encourage the public to switch their bank accounts, pensions and utility bills to greener alternatives.”

Fellow XR INverness member Simon MacLardie added: “Scientists say global carbon emissions must be cut by half by the end of this decade if humanity is to have a reasonable chance of keeping temperature rises below 1.5C, yet governments keep bailing fossil fuel producers out.”

Meanwhile, demonstrators in Moray also hung a banner warning there is “no future in fossil fuel” on the A96 Inverness to Aberdeen road.

They attached the sign to a footbridge crossing the route at Forres.

Those who gathered said the banner was designed to call attention to the need to devote more effort to alternative energy sources to prepare for the end of fossil fuels.
