Forres will again tune into pipe music today as part of the 86th Forres Highland games celebrations.

One week after hosting the second year of the European Pipe Band Championships at Grant Park in Forres, the town will again be the centre of visitors attractions.

The popular day out will kick off in the park at 12.30pm, after Forres Pipe Band and RAF Lossiemouth Pipe Band march up the High Street from the Mercat Cross.

Games secretary Mike Scott said: “The games this year will feature senior and junior heavy events, massed pipe bands, Highland dancing, track and cycling events, open senior and junior piping, tug o war, children’s entertainment, as well as stalls and a beer tent.”

This year will again feature a 10k road race which already has attracted a strong field with many late entries.

Mr Scott added: “Hopefully there will be a good crowd as the weather is looking promising so far, so I would urge locals and visitors alike to come along and join in the fun and activities at the Grant Park today.

“There really is something for everyone.”

A total of 11 pipe bands will play at the games with a band travelling all the way from Australia.

New this year will be a chanter competition organised by the Forres pipe bands for those 15 years of age and under.

The tug of war will include teams from Cawdor, the Great Glen and Elgin.

Featuring again this year will be the ever popular grass cycling event which usually attracts a full field.

Mr Scott’s wife Lena, who has been on the game’s administration board for 30 years, has the honour this year of being the chieftain.

Admission costs £5 for adults and £2 for concessions.
