An investigation has been launched by Moray Council after a cargo ship collided with the pier at Buckie Harbour.

The H&S Fairness, a Dutch vessel, delivered malt barley at to the port on August 2.

Upon arrival, the vessel’s bow collided with the pier.

There was no damage to the harbour other than some paint transfer, but photos show the vessel was dented as a result of the incident.

The fenders of the ship were able to prevent more serious damage.

It is understood the vessel entered the harbour under the guidance of its own skipper, which is their responsibility.

No request was made for assistance, however, this would have been available upon request.

There were also no severe weather conditions on the day which would have an impact on the ship entering the harbour.

An investigation will be carried out to determine how the collision occurred.

A Moray Council spokeswoman said: “The responsibility for navigation of the vessel is with the skipper.

“As the harbour authority, there was no reason from our perspective for the vessel not to enter the harbour. The weather conditions were within the limits and a pilot is not required, although it can be provided if requested.

“The matter is being investigated and reported appropriately in line with our responsibilities.”

H&S Fairness was docked at Buckie Harbour for two days and departed on the afternoon of Thursday, August 4.
