RAF Lossiemouth took on responsibility for “Quick Reaction Alert” duties for the north of the country last September, meaning Typhoons from the base can spring into action within 10 minutes at any time of day or night to intercept threats to UK airspace.
In their first assignment since moving from RAF Leuchars, the jets challenged Russian military Bears detected in international airspace that month.
A spokesman for RAF Lossiemouth said the RAF routinely intercepted, identified and escorted Russian aircraft that moved within the UK’s area of interest.
RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire are Britain’s two Typhoon bases and together form its Quick Reaction Alert force.
