Moray village to put on party fit for a Queen to celebrate Her Majesty’s birthday

Portgordon harbour will play host to a lot of the celebrations.

A village gala is taking on a royal theme to belatedly celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Portgordon residents are banding together to organise a day of events to mark Her Majesty’s lifetime of devotion to the country.

Village hall chairwoman Sue Lane said: “The hall will be decorated with flags and bunting to get everyone into the mood. We’re also going to have some marquees and a picnic area so everyone can get together.

“The school has been doing a lot of work too. The children have been learning about the Queen so they are also getting involved in the day.”

A village gala has previously been held in the past but has not been organised in recent years.

The Harbour Group and Portgordon Post are also contributing to the special day.

A disco featuring music from throughout the Queen’s reign will be held with guests being invited to come dressed suited and booted for the decade of their choice from the modern Elizabethan age.

Celebrations were held across the country last month to mark the Queen’s birthday.

Mrs Lane said: “There was some discussion about wanting to hold an event in the village to celebrate the 90th birthday but we wanted to be more inclusive.

“In the past groups have organised their own events but we wanted to come together to do something to get the whole village together.

“We also wanted to do something that would be slightly different and a bit more relaxed, while still being centred on the village hall and harbour green.”

Portgordon’s royal celebration will take place on Saturday, June 4.
