Classic car enthusiasts descended on Brodie Castle yesterday to see more than 100 years of motoring heritage.

The annual event celebrated its 40th anniversary at the weekend in the picturesque setting.

About 300 cars and bikes were proudly displayed on the castle’s lawn as petrol heads got up close to look under the bonnets.

Earlier in the day the vintage vehicles roared through the Moray countryside from Glenfarclas Distillery to Elgin before finishing at Brodie.

Five scarlet red Ferraris proved one of the most popular attractions with visitors eager to get a rare glimpse of the luxury sports cars with the 1990 F40 was among the most expensive vehicles on display.

Other attractions included a 1935 Austin 7 Ruby, which was a particular hit due to the event’s 40th anniversary, and a 1912 Austin Wellington, which was the oldest in the show.

Freda McWhirter, chairwoman of organisers Historic Wheels Club, said: “It has come on so much from when it first started, there was only a handful of cars then.

“We always come to Brodie Castle, it’s the perfect finishing point. Everyone takes so much pride in their cars and bikes, it’s such a spectacular sight to see them all.”

On Saturday about 30 of the cars created a stir as they paraded along the coast to Macduff before returning.

Last year the event raised £10,500 for local causes with organisers confident yesterday’s event will surpass the total. A meeting of members this week will decide where the money is donated.
