A coach-load of support has been collected by campaigners in Moray who are helping vulnerable people affected by the coronavirus lockdown.

The Buckie Kindness Group was formed in February with the aim of generating community spirit among locals – but has been immediately thrust into coordinating help during the pandemic.

Already more than 60 volunteers have signed up to assist with about 400 people in the area since the lockdown began.

Donations have been sent in from across the community but concerns were raised about some people wanting to help who could not travel far from their homes.

At the weekend the group took a coach, which was supplied by Maynes Coaches, to communities in Buckie to collect items with more trips planned this week.

John Stuart, who helped establish the group, said: “The response has been really phenomenal, it’s been a very creative way of working by identifying problems and working out how to solve them.

“People being able to donate items to our collection point at the Portessie Public Hall was one problem, we had people approach us about that, so we decided to take the collection point to them.

“We have only been running about four weeks but we’ve already got regulars and we go into some of the sheltered developments where residents don’t really have anyone coming in and out.”

Projects run by the group recently include distributing more than 50 meals prepared at Time Restaurant to older residents, providing advice and collecting shopping.
