Vandals damage Moray park just days after new equipment is installed

Turf has been stuffed in the swings at Ian Johnston Park in Buckie.

A play park in a Moray town has been vandalised within days of new equipment being installed.

The revamp of Ian Johnston Park in Buckie was unveiled earlier this week following a £43,000 funding boost from the Scottish Government.

The previous slide and swings had been sealed off amid safety concerns due to the age of the equipment with the council unable to fund repairs itself.

Local children got involved with choosing the design for the site, which is popular with youngsters due it being near Cluny Primary School, Buckie High School and the town’s sports centre.

However, within days of the new equipment being installed damage has been reported at the park with grass seen to be torn up from the area surrounding the play equipment and stuffed in swings.

Buckie councillor Sonya Warren said the damage had been reported to her by a parent who lives near the park.

She said: “It’s just appalling and disrespectful behaviour, particularly at such a new park.”

It is hoped that future projects can be done in the area to revamp the park’s pavilion and tennis courts.
