Final event at Moray driving range to raise funds for new sports centre

Kathryn Evans, chief executive of Moray Sports Centre, is already warming up for the event.

A driving range in a Moray town is going down swinging by raising money to fund new sports amenities.

The practice range at Elgin Golf Club will close at the end of the year after being an integral part of the century-old course for decades.

Fundraising skill challenges have been organised to give the driving range a fitting send-off while money is collected for the proposed Moray Sports Centre.

Competitors will be able to put their skills to the test during a series of challenges and will be offered the opportunity to view plans for the £12million sports hall.

Kathryn Evans, who is spearheading the development, is eager to see golfers turn out in above-par numbers for a final visit to the range.

She said: “We wanted to organise a closing event for it because it won’t be opening again in January.

“It’s an opportunity for us to raise a bit of funds for the sports centre and let people see what is going to be in it.

“Golfers are a different market from those we’ve already spoken to, so it’s going to be interesting to hear what they have to say about the plans.”

The current driving range will be flattened to make way for 114 new houses and 20 flats on the land at the south of the town with a new facility due to open on Birnie Road in 2017.

The new sports centre will have an indoor hall for basketball, netball and badminton as well as 600 seats to cater for a range of events.

Yesterday, Ms Evans confirmed development was continuing apace on building a new sports centre for Moray, which could be open at the beginning of 2018.

She added: “At the moment, we’re busy applying to various funds to put together more investment while we wait for planning permission.

“We’ve got to the next stage with some of them and are expecting to find out about them next month.

“We’ve also got our first member of staff, a modern apprentice in training, so things are starting to come together for it all.”

The golf fundraiser is at Elgin Driving Range on Saturday, December 3 from 10am to 2pm. Entry is £2.50.
