Injured veterans and their carers have shared their stories with each other at a charity cooking workshop.

Help for Heroes organised the event at the Oakwood Cookery School near Elgin to help service personnel and their families rebuild their lives after leaving the armed forces.

Six would-be bakers made their own scones and biscuits under the supervision of trained chefs so they can make them at home.

The forces charity organised the event as part of their Band of Brothers fellowship – which is a network available to troops that have suffered a life-limiting or career-ending injury.

The group also provides support to families by creating the opportunity to meet others who are in a similar situation.

Veteran Ian Davies, from Forres, said: “It was great fun. I don’t think I’ll need to eat for about a week but it was worth it to get together and do something different.”

The fellowship also provides financial assistance to families that are struggling while coming to terms with a loved-one no longer being able to serve in the forces.

Help for Heroes event coordinator Gerry McGregor added: “There were demos of every dish which the class then made afterwards following printed recipes, which they could take home with them for future reference.

“Highlights included discovering how easy it was to have fun and learn something at the same time – not to mention eating the results afterwards but still having lots of goodies to take home.”

Anyone who needs support, who has served in the forces, can contact the charity by phoning 01748 834148.
