Police investigating the “brutal” assault of a woman stopped dozens of motorists in Elgin yesterday.

The 44-year-old was found in a lane near Woodside Terrace in Elgin with blood pouring from head wounds just a few feet from her front door.

Police returned to the scene exactly one week after the incident happened yesterday to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of the attack.

Investigators have been unable to speak to the victim due to the severity of her injuries.

About 40 drivers were stopped by officers between 4.45am and 5.30am, which is about the time the woman left her home on her way to work and was attacked.

Detective Inspector Norman Stevenson said: “I would like to thank the motorists that we stopped for their patience and assistance as we continue to carry out extensive inquiries into this brutal assault.

“The information we received will build on the picture we already have in terms of who passes through the area and at what time – and if any individuals looked out of place in the minutes before and after this incident.

“Without being able to speak to the woman involved yet because of the severity of her injuries, we are relying on the public at this crucial time to provide us with information.

“It is essential we piece together the moments leading up to the assault and build a picture of her life and acquaintances.”

The woman, who is understood to be Polish, remains in hospital in Aberdeen following the attack.

Officers have already searched the lane that runs between Woodside Terrace and Kirkhill Court in a hunt for clues.

At the time of the attack, the woman was wearing a light jacket, blue jeans, brown boots and was carry a black handbag.

DI Stevenson added: “Even if you think your information might be insignificant, I would respectfully ask you to let us make that assessment and come forward.”

Anyone with information should contact police by phoning 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
