A Moray musician is aiming to secure himself a UK tour by winning a nationwide competition.

Danny Mortimer, from Elgin, has already beaten more than 1,200 other competitors to get to the Scottish final of the Soundwaves contest.

Now the singer-songwriter, who describes his tracks as “melodic rock”, will have a live face-off with 14 other hopefuls in Glasgow next month.

The 30-year-old, who works for an embroidery firm, has been playing guitar since leaving secondary school more than a decade ago.

However, he believes the competition has given him his best chance yet to break into the industry.

He said: “I try to play gigs as much as possible, sometimes at the Copper Dog in Craigellachie and also the Beach Bar in Lossiemouth.

“I’m still pinching myself that I’ve made it as far as I have. I’ve been through three rounds already. It’s amazing to think how far I’ve come.

“I started playing after going to see the Red Hot Chilli Peppers in Edinburgh just after I left school. They were just awesome. After that I started to think seriously about playing.”

Mr Mortimer has been a familiar face at music events in the north-east, performing at Speyfest in Fochabers, the NXNE festival on Deeside and Wolfstock in Banff.

Supporters are now readying themselves to make the trip to Glasgow in February to support the guitarist realise his ambitions.

He added: “Every year I try and set realistic ambitions. This year I want to play at the Ironworks in Inverness. I never thought I stood a chance in the competition.”
