Gas works to reduce A96 to a single lane next month

The work will be done on East Road in Elgin.
The work will be done on East Road in Elgin.

A busy north-east road will be reduced to a single lane for nearly a month due to gas works.

One lane of the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road will be shut for four weeks as part of the £300,000 project.

Temporary traffic lights will be installed on the eastern approach to Elgin in order to control the flow of traffic with delays expected.

Gas distribution company SGN will be replacing old mains and services with a new plastic pipe to ensure safe supplies continue in the area.

The work will begin near to the Reiket Lane roundabout on Tuesday, April 3 and will then progress eastwards along the A96 during the four weeks.

At peak times the traffic lights will be manually controlled in order to minimise disruption.

Project manager Allan Howie said: “We appreciate roadworks can be frustrating, however the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years.

“This means once the work has been completed, Elgin homes and businesses will enjoy the benefits for many years to come.

“We will be doing everything we can to limit disruption during our essential project, which includes working extended hours and weekends where possible.”
