Royal Mail unable to deliver post to Moray homes on ‘health and safety grounds’ – despite people already living in them

The Royal Mail is refusing to deliver to Moray residents living on a newly-built estate on health and safety grounds.

Despite people already having moved into homes at Linkwood Steadings in the south of Elgin, posties are being prevented from going to all the houses due to safety concerns.

Instead, mail is being held at the town’s delivery office for residents to collect it from there.

Yesterday the Royal Mail confirmed that it had now started deliveries to some of the properties on Distillery Drive and Cooperage Close.

However, concerns about construction traffic for buildings still under construction is continuing to prevent deliveries to the entire estate, which is being built by Springfield Properties.

Moray MP Douglas Ross said: “Of course, health and safety must come first, but if residents are safely in their homes it seems strange that there should be a question mark over whether postal workers can deliver the mail to them.

“This is obviously far from ideal but hopefully normal service will start for the remaining houses as I have been assured the local office will be continually reviewing the situation.”

A Royal Mail spokesman explained that deliveries would begin as soon as possible.

He said: “There are several properties under construction in Distillery Drive, which are still unsafe to access due to the movement of construction traffic.

“However, we will reassess the site regularly and will commence all deliveries once it is deemed safe to do so.”
