A Moray music group will hold a poignant concert to support the charities and hospital that helped their conductor battle a deadly disease.
Glenn Munro from Elgin was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called pseudomyxoma about two years ago.
Now Moray Concert Brass has organised a special easy listening concert to raise funds for causes that are close to the school instructor’s heart as part of a summer festival of music in the town.
A recording of the event will also be released to add to the total in aid of the Pseudomyxoma Survivor charity and the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, where Mr Munro received his specialist treatment.
He said: “I feel a lot better now. I returned to work in November last year and then went back full-time in January.
“I needed two operations on my bowel because they kept finding other bits and pieces of cancer.
“With all the parts they’ve taken out, I should be about a stone lighter but I’ve actually put on weight, which I’m told is a good sign.”
Mr Munro, who plays the trumpet, still requires precautionary scans every six months to ensure the cancer has not returned but said he had received “incredible” support from everyone in the band.
The weekend extravaganza will begin at Elgin Town Hall with the group performing pop and rock tunes from across the ages on June 8.
The following night a gala concert will be held at the same venue with some of the country’s top brass musicians visiting Moray.
Trumpet and flugel horn player Bruce Adams, who has won the Top Trumpet prize three times at the British Jazz Awards, will feature alongside trombone player Gordon Campbell, who has worked with international stars including Ella Fitzgerald, Barbara Streisand and Robbie Williams.
The Old Jazz Fountain Orchestra, a big band featuring some of the UK’s leading jazz musicians, will also return to Elgin having performed two sold-out events in December.
The attention will then turn to the easy listening event in St Giles’ Church on June 10, where Mr Munro and friends will perform tunes including Gonna Fly Now and Angels.
Mr Munro added: “We always try to have an event early in summer. It’s just a nice way to start the season.”
All the concerts begin at 7.30pm and entry is £8, with concessions £5.
