Spiritual homecoming for Moray sound assistant to work on Question Time

The filming of BBC show Question Time in Moray was a poignant return for one member of the production crew.

Andrew Carey was brought up in Lhanbryde, Fochabers and Lossiemouth and was one of the original members of Moray Youth Theatre.

During that time he spent countless hours at Elgin Town Hall working on their productions while also assisting other groups before leaving the region in 1984 to pursue a career in broadcasting.

When Mr Carey learned that the programme was to be travelling to the venue he immediately offered his help as a sound assistant, viewing the event as a “spiritual homecoming”.

He said: “I left the area in the mid-1980s to pursue a career in broadcast sound in London having been closely involved with the Moray and Scottish youth theatres.

“As one of the original members of Moray Youth Theatre I spent a lot of time in Elgin Town Hall doing the sound for many of their productions and also got to help out on many of the other events in the hall.

“For the last 30 years I have worked for BFBS (British Forces Broadcasting Service) radio and TV and for Sky in London until early 2016.

“When I found out that Question Time was going to be recorded in Elgin I contacted the production company and offered my services.”
