Dash-cam appeal as police continue to investigate Elgin sexual assault

Police have issued a dash-cam appeal after a woman was sexually assaulted in an Elgin park.

A 33-year-old woman was attacked in the area of Doocot Park, close to North Street, at around 1am today. She was not injured, but visibly shaken.

A cordon has been up for most of the day while police carry out inquiries.

Police appeal after woman is sexually assaulted in Elgin park

Locals were shocked to see the police activity when they woke up, and described it as a “friendly area”.

Vincent Murdoch, who lives in the houses adjacent to Doocot Park, was also concerned about the night-time incident.

He said: “It does get quite dark at nights down there but I never thought I would hear about an incident like this happening.

“New Elgin is meant to be a safe neighbourhood where everyone is friendly to each other so this is quite a drastic difference to that.”

One mum, who regularly attends at the park, said: “I’m horrified something like this has happened in such a well-used and loved park.

“My children play there on a daily basis so it is shocking to hear about.”

Elgin City South councillor Graham Leadbitter described it as a “very worrying incident”.

“Obviously this is a very worrying incident and completely distressing for the victim involved,” he said.

“Fortunately these types of incidents are rare in Elgin and I would urge people in the local community to be vigilant and if any have any relevant information, even if it seems small, to contact the police.”

Officers are now asking anyone who has dash-cam footage of the area and surrounding streets that was taken between 11pm last night and 1.30am this morning to get in touch as soon as possible.

Anyone who thinks they can help is asked to contact Police on 101 as soon as possible or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 to remain anonymous. Officers thanked those who have already helped with inquiries.
