Elgin driver has to sit his driving test again after being caught speeding

An inexperienced Moray driver has to sit his driving test again after being caught breaking the speed limit.

Police officers estimated Danny Edwards was driving at 96mph when he was clocked by a mobile speed gun on the A941 between Elgin and Lossiemouth on January 21.

The 24-year-old, of 129 Muirfield Road, Elgin, admitted driving carelessly at excessive speeds while not leaving enough distance to the car ahead.

At Elgin Sheriff Court yesterday, fiscal Ross Carvel said Edwards was spotted by police as he was too close to the car ahead.

He said: “The speed is approximate on the basis that the speed the officers detected was the car in front. The accused’s vehicle was seen to be too close to the car in front.”

Edwards was seen by officers driving in the Sunbank area at about 9pm.

Defence solicitor Robert Cruickshank said his client had been able to stop his car in time when the vehicle ahead braked, but accepted the distance was “not what it should have been”.

Mr Cruickshank added that six penalty points would result in Edwards having to sit his driving test again.

Sheriff Olga Pasportnikov said: “I consider this to be the upper end of dangerous driving, particularly because you are an inexperienced driver.”

Edwards was fined £400 and had nine penalty points added to his licence.
