Improved junctions and one-way systems have been proposed as a way of relieving Elgin’s increasingly congested traffic system.
Motorists in the town are being urged to join the debate on Moray’s Council’s latest plans to unclog roads after the Western Link Road was scrapped.
More than 450 people have already made their voices heard by completing surveys and attending drop-in meetings at the St Giles Centre.
Roadworks on the A96 are currently leading to long tailbacks with drivers being diverted away from the main artery through the town.
Elgin City South councillor John Divers believes the current situation highlights the pressing need for traffic issues to be addressed.
He said: “If we are not going to have the Western Link Road, we need to look at better junctions. I don’t know if they might also look at one-way systems, it will depend on what the public has to say.
“We already know that, at certain times, it is difficult to get out onto Linkwood Road and New Elgin Road. With the A96 shut at the moment, it’s backed up as far as the roundabout sometimes.”
The essential gas maintenance, which has closed the A96 westbound through the town, is not due to be finished until August 14.
Residents have until Sunday to submit their views, which will be used by the local authority to draw up a new transport strategy for Elgin to help cope with the booming population.
Moray Council is determined to ensure that as many residents in the town as possible have their say about the changes.
A spokesman added: “It is vitally important that we hear the views of people who travel to, in and around Elgin, particularly the problems and issues they face and what they think could be done to improve their journeys.
“The response to the survey has been very good and we are extremely grateful to those who have already given us views and comments.”
