Community groups across the north-east are set to share a slice of government funding.

Projects winning cash from the Awards For All Scotland Grant were announced last night, with groups from across the north-east now set to benefit from almost £28,000.

Among them, vital funds will be splashed on creating secure storage for a Cuminestown sports scheme.

The James Tennant Playing Field Trust, based in the village, will use its grant of £9,000 to build a secure storage facility for sports equipment and the maintenance machinery.

The grants, which give groups a chance to apply for between £500 and £10,000, aims to help improve local communities and the lives of people most in need.

It is a joint awards programme from the Big Lottery Fund and SportScotland and provides money for a range of projects which involve bringing local people together, helping people learn, improving local spaces and getting people more active.

Last night, local MSP Gillian Martin hailed the win for Cuminestown.

“Sporting facilities are a vital resource that help bring our communities together, especially rural communities. It’s great that the James Tennant Playing Field Trust will be able to carry on their good work by improving the facilities in Cuminestown,” she said.

Aden Community Allotments in Mintlaw was also granted funding yesterday.

The group behind the project was handed £9,635 to create a community hut within the allotment area.

Meanwhile, Meiklemill Primary School has been awarded a grant of £9,126 to help fund an outdoor play area for its nursery.

“Outdoor play is an important aspect of early learning and I welcome schools such as Meiklemill improving their facilities in this area,” Mrs Martin added.
