Efforts to preserve and protect a famous open-air swimming pool have been bolstered by a “exceptionally generous” donation from an anonymous couple.
The Friends of Tarlair Community Group has announced that their charity has accepted a cheque for £1,000 from two unnamed locals.
The cash will support promoting and restoring the Banffshire coast facility.
A spokesman for the registered charity said: “Friends of Tarlair Community Group received an exceptionally generous gift from a lovely couple in the form of a £1,000 cheque.
“These lovely people had been looking for a worthy local charity to support, and we are extremely proud that our own charity has been chosen by them.
“We have a healthy amount of funding now and are keen to work on using this to further community facilities at Tarlair.”
The couple asked the charity to keep their identity a secret but the spokesman added: “I hope they read this so that they may receive a more public thank you.”
Tarlair swimming pool originally opened in 1931 at the base of the sea cliffs just east of Macduff.
The Art Deco style complex includes changing rooms and a large pool. Since 2007 it has been protected as a A-listed building.
Historic Scotland have described it as one of the finest examples of an outdoor pool alongside Stonehaven and Gourock.
The pool is filled with pumped sea water which is then flushed out at high tide.
The main pool is accompanied by a boating pool and two smaller paddling pools.
Four years ago a group of local residents launched a Save Tarlair campaign online which attracted the attention of thousands of supporters. Since then the charity has been established to work with Aberdeenshire Council to secure the site’s future.
In 2014 the local authority spent £300,000 refurbishing elements of the pool to preserve it for future generations.
