A community group has been founded to help keep a north-east cemetery in pristine condition.
Friends of Turriff Cemetery Group will meet for the first time this weekend to support ongoing works at the town’s burial ground to make sure it continues to be kept in a respectable condition.
The group, which will bring together concerned locals and families who have relatives buried at the ground, will carry out landscaping work alongside Aberdeenshire Council employees on Sunday morning.
The work will include leaf clearing and tidying the paths at the cemetery.
Anyone who wants to get involved is urged to attend their first meeting on Sunday, between 10am and 11am.
Local football club Turriff Thistle has already agreed to give a helping hand and tools, and safety equipment will be issued to volunteers who want to join in.
Fraser Watson, a member of the Friends of Turriff Cemetery group, said the scheme would be good for the town “in the long run”.
“Working with Aberdeenshire Council on this initiative gives the community the opportunity to work towards having a more attractive cemetery in Turriff,” he added.
The initiative has been hailed by the local authority as a good example of partnership working between communities and council services.
It is hoped that while the council will continue to maintain the cemetery grounds, local people will be willing to build on its work by carrying out additional tasks which will further improve the site for visitors.
Friends of Turriff Cemetery have now formed a committee to coordinate future projects.
It has been described as a “positive step in the right direction” for members’ ambitions.
