Councillors are expected to back £100,000 worth of flood protection measures for Banff and Buchan when they meet in the region today.
Members of the local area committee will be presented with a new coastal protection package for their approval.
Among the improvements being considered are new flood relief road drains for Banff and Macduff at a cost of £20,000 and £10,000 to repair a hole in the seawall at Crovie.
In his report to the Banff and Buchan area committee, Aberdeenshire Council’s infrastructure director, Stephen Archer, confirmed the authority oversaw around 125 miles of coastline and nearly 2,500 miles of waterways.
He added: “Aberdeenshire Council has a duty to inspect watercourses from time to time and assess the flooding risks associated with them.
“The council is then required to undertake clearance and maintenance works where these will lead to a significant reduction in the flood risk to a property.”
Mr Archer stated that existing flood and coastal defences were also routinely reviewed.
Other measures under consideration as part of the Aberdeenshire-wide flood protection package include a flood wall at Lackie Head car park near Fraserburgh and a new relief drain in Auchnagatt.
A number of “reserve” projects, which will be completed if they are financially viable, are also on the table. These include a feasibility study for improvements in Sandend.
The Banffshire coastline was battered by storms and high tides earlier this year. In January, many local residents faced the threat of tidal flooding.
The council handed out sandbags in Macduff, Banff, Scotstown and Fraserburgh after the Scottish Environment Protection Agency warned of high tides.
Dog walkers and photographers were also urged to steer clear of cliffs and harbours as dramatic images showed 10ft and 20ft waves crashing over quaysides across the region.
Members of the Banff and Buchan area committee will meet in Banff to agree the package of measures.
