More than a dozen streets in a north-east town will be subject to traffic restrictions next week when a community gears up for its annual May Day celebrations.
The event attracts thousands of people to Turriff every year and the town centre will be closed to traffic for the 30th time on Monday.
The celebration is the inaugural event in a packed programme of summer festivities in the town, which includes the famous agricultural show in July.
The whole community rallies around the May Day event, which will be marked this year with two special contributions by the town’s crafters and historians.
Craft shop Madhatters is opening its doors this month to artists who want to help raise cash for the mental health charity Mind.
And everything created – including knit works and prints – will be sold during May Day to boost the coffers of the Scottish Association for Mental Health.
Meanwhile, local woman, Hannah Pennig, will launch the Doric Neuk from the town hall in a bid to promote the dialect across the whole of Aberdeenshire.
The German linguist has organised a campaign to raise thousands of pounds for the initiative, which will offer a space where locals and tourists can learn about Doric and its history.
Mrs Pennig, who has previously worked at the Institute of Low German in her home country, said she was inspired to do her part after falling in love with the region.
She added: “On May Day, we will have some Doric quizzes and a Doric limerick competition. You can learn about Doric and its history, how it is related to other languages and who speaks it.”
To accommodate the event, parts of Main Street, High Street, Schoolhill and Balmellie Street will be closed to traffic.
Additionally, no-waiting restrictions will be in place across the town centre including on Market Street, School Lane, Main Street and Manse Road.
