The skipper behind the campaign to save the night watchmen at Macduff harbour has made a last-ditch appeal to council chiefs before they make a final decision.
John Clark, skipper of the Reliance II, has implored the local authority to rethink proposals to scrap the post as part of an overhaul of the Banffshire port.
Mr Clark, along with leading members of the local fishing industry, have warned the move could endanger the lives of trawlermen and discourage skippers from landing profitable catches in Macduff.
A petition led by the Reliance II captain collected more than 1,000 local signatures and was presented to council leaders last month.
Now Mr Clark has issued an 11th hour plea to Aberdeenshire infrastructure chief Stephen Archer to reverse the policy.
In an e-mail to Mr Archer, who he addressed at a meeting of the infrastructure committee last week, Mr Clark said that the value of fish landed at Macduff this year has risen dramatically after the port relaxed regulations.
As a result the council – which collects 2.5% landing dues – has benefited financially.
“In Macduff the skippers have got together with the new Macduff harbour master and we have arranged fish transportation, fresh empty box transportation and even fresh ice transportation making Macduff harbour a one port stop,” Mr Clark said.
“This has cost the council nothing but could net the council more in landing dues.”
Mr Clark added: “I can only for the good of Macduff Harbour ask you to reconsider the decision to axe the night watchmen service and work with us to vastly improve Macduff Harbour and in doing so breathe new life into Macduff as its sorely needed.”
At last week’s meeting of the infrastructure committee Mr Archer told councillors a final decision would be made this week.
He said: “I thank the committee and assure you your comments are noted. Clearly I need to discuss with colleagues. The intention is to come to a decision by the middle of next week.”
Councillors unanimously backed Mr Clark’s position after he made an impassioned speech to the group. However the ultimate decision rests with council officers.
