Banff locals encouraged to get outdoors to help watersports group celebrate 15th anniversary

Residents of a north-east town are being encouraged to get outdoors to help a watersports group celebrate its 15th anniversary.

The Surf’sup Centre, which teaches all ages and abilities a range of sports from Banff Links Beach, is now hosting family days every Saturday and Sunday.

Groups can participate in stand up paddleboarding (Sup), surfing and other watersports all year round.

Family members who aren’t keen on the water can bring food for the barbecue or instruments to play, enjoying time outdoors by the sea.

The non-profit club uses the money raised from lessons to purchase more equipment and upgrade facilities.

Davie Johnson founded the group in 2003 after his wife suggested he start a surf club and has seen the club grow.

He said: “We are starting family days for people who can’t go in the sea but can join us to have a BBQ or bring a guitar and gather for a traditional beach day out.

“Over the years we’ve seen had a minke whale hanging around, dolphins and we saw a seal on today’s lesson so Banff is as good as any where in the world to surf.

“My dad worked until he was 65 and died at 67, not having had time to do things he loved so I work on cladding for buildings but everyday I take a couple of hours off to teach surfing.

“I’ve surfed all over the world. It’s a great, exciting and exhilarating feeling when you manage to stand on a good wave.

“We have been surfing for years and I would like to just pass that onto the next generation.”

The first family day will start at 10am on Saturday.
