Man who confessed to attacking and biting north-east man says he alone was responsible

The man who has admitted carrying out a brutal attack in which he bit a north-east man’s ears and left him permanently disfigured has told a court he alone was responsible and another man on trial did nothing wrong.

Patrick Mcglone is on trial at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, accused of assaulting Jamie Holt at a property on Longate in Peterhead on March 3 this year.

He is alleged to have repeatedly punched him, struck his head with a neck chain, bitten his ears and left him with a permanent injury.

The court heard previously from Mr Holt who suggested that, while it was Jack Elms who attacked and bit him, Mcglone had thrown the first punch and had stopped other people coming to his assistance.

Jurors heard earlier this week Elms had already confessed to carrying out this attack.

And yesterday, the 23-year-old appeared in the dock from HMP Grampian to give his version of events.

The court previously heard Elms and Mr Holt had got into a fight in Deja Vu nightclub earlier in the evening.

Elms said he was on his way home with friends, including Mcglone, when the resident of the property in Longate invited him up for a few drinks.

When he got there, he claimed he saw Mr Holt, whom he had not expected to be present.

He said: “I saw Jamie Holt sanding in the front room, other people were on the sofa, I instantly attacked Jamie.

“I hit him through the television and started punching him, ripped his chain off his neck slapping him with his chain.

“I hit him a couple more times and I bit his ears.”

However, fiscal depute Alison Reid challenged his version of events.

She said: “Peterhead is not the biggest of places, but it is a reasonable enough sized town that it seems a very big coincidence the person you assaulted was there.”

He replied: “It was a coincidence, and not a good one. Look at the situation.”

It was then put to him: “I’m suggesting it is the case you are deliberately trying to mislead the court, you do not have anything to lose.”

Elms replied: “I do not have anything to gain from standing here lying.

“I was the sole person who attacked this man.”

Mcglone was also accused of carrying out separate attacks on Jordan Rose and Mr Holt in Deja Vu in Peterhead and an assault on Mr Rose in Longate but these charges were dropped.

The 33-year-old, of Peterhead, denies the remaining charges.

The trial, before Sheriff Jack Brown, continues.
