A fish factory engineer has been fined after he punched a police officer at a nightclub and was caught with cocaine.

Peter Humphreys was found with the class A drug during a night out at Déjà Vu on Queen Street in Peterhead.

The 23-year-old also made homophobic remarks after being taken to Fraserburgh police station on November 3 last year.

Humphreys appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court yesterday and pled guilty to assaulting an officer and being in possession of a controlled drug.

He also admitted behaving in threatening and abusive manner by making the abusive  remarks at Fraserburgh police station.

Fiscal depute Ruairidh McAlister told the court police were at the Buchan nightclub as part of a routine licensed premises check.

He said they went into the toilet and found Humphreys and asked if they could search him.

Mr McAlister said Humphreys began acting “erratically” so they decided to remove him from the nightclub.

He said: “He was taken out of the premises and officers attempted to restrain him.  He punched one of the officers striking his body armour.

“As the accused was restrained a small bag of cocaine fell out of his pocket.  It weighed 0.9grammes and had a street value of £50 to £100.”

The accused was taken to Fraserburgh police station where he said “why do keep staring at me?  Do you fancy me?” to an officer.

Defence agent Sam Milligan said Humphreys should have let the police search him as part of their investigation.

Mr Milligan said: “He is challenged by officers and he should’ve allowed them to search him.

“He is in full-time employment although he is in receipt of statutory sick pay at the moment after he lost the tip of his finger in a door.

“Mr Humphreys is due to return to work as a night shift engineer at a fish factory on February 1.”

Sheriff Christine McCrossan fined Humphreys, of Cross Street, Fraserburgh, £525.
