Councillors asked to approve funding for gull cull in Peterhead

Councillors will discuss the funding for the gull control scheme next week.
Councillors will discuss the funding for the gull control scheme next week.

Councillors will be asked to approve funding to continue the crackdown on bothersome gulls in a north-east town centre.

More than £12,500 could go to the Rediscover Peterhead organisation to allow it to remove nests and eggs from rooftops.

The council worked alongside the Business Improvement District (Bid) body last summer and successfully removed 541 nests and 1168 eggs.

Some town centre streets were closed to allow pest control experts to use a crane to reach the areas occupied by gulls.

Aberdeenshire Council is considering a grant of £12,800 to allow that work to continue for the next two years.

Bid would then matchfund this sum to make sure the scheme continued.

A report by local authority infrastructure chief Stephen Archer stated that teaming up with Rediscover Peterhead meant the crackdown on the birds could cover a wider area.

He said: “Joint working and partnership allowed resources to be joined and a larger more effective project to be carried out.

“It is therefore recommended that Rediscover Peterhead continue for the next two years to administer Aberdeenshire Council’s priority streets for gull collection along with the extended area.

“It is therefore proposed that £12,800 be granted to Rediscover Peterhead, which they will match by £12,800 to cover the wider area.”

Members of the Buchan area committee will discuss the proposals when they meet in Peterhead on Tuesday.
