Man told his supportive mum saved him from jail after Mintlaw assault

A jealous lover who broke his friend’s jaw has told he would have been given a lengthy jail term – if it had not been for his supportive mum.

Jordan Rae left Michael Morrice with a broken nose, two broken ribs and a punctured lung after lashing out earlier this year.

Having apologised for the assault, the 22-year-old then demanded his victim clean up his own blood with his T-shirt.

Rae previously admitted the attack, which happened at an address in Mintlaw on April 26 this year.

He lashed out after he spotted 41-year-old Mr Morrice “looking” at his girlfriend.

Yesterday, Sheriff Morag McLaughlin told him that his actions warranted a “significant period in custody”.

However, she told Aberdeen Sheriff Court that his support network – including his mother, a local boxing club and mental health workers – was reason enough to “put faith in him” and avoid the custodial alternative.

He was given a two-year supervision order and put on curfew for six months.

Sheriff McLaughlin instructed Rae “to embrace the supervision” which will result in him being fitted with an electronic tag and an 8pm-6am curfew.

She will be updated on how he is adapting to the order next month.

Rae’s solicitor Stuart Flowerdew said his client had spent time with staff at Royal Cornhill Hospital in Aberdeen.

He had since been diagnosed with a mental health condition and treatment “seemed to have taken effect”

Mr Flowerdew argued Rae being released on curfew would be a “more appropriate transition to adult life” than another spell in prison.
