New cinema complex will open its doors in Peterhead in December

A plush new film house will open its doors in a north-east town in December.

Arc Cinema does not have an official opening date, but is planning to welcome the public around Christmas at the former Gala Bingo site on Peterhead’s Marischal Street.

The state-of-the-art five-screen cinema which has been hailed by Aberdeenshire Council as a “significant opportunity” for the Blue Toon will lead to the closure of the volunteer-run Peterhead Cinema at the Leisure Community Centre.

But Peterhead Cinema has encouraged its customers to share the news about the new development on Facebook.

The post read: “Most of you will be aware that a new cinema is coming to Peterhead in the near future. We have taken the decision that we will not be able to compete with this new facility.

“It is with regret and a heavy heart we announce that Peterhead Cinema will be screening for the last time on Saturday December 21.”

The facility where Peterhead Cinema operates offers a 280-seat air-conditioned theatre.

It is run as a community group with a team of volunteers. Any profit that is made is for the benefit of groups using the community theatre.

Arc Cinema will boast 422 luxury leather armchair seats, digital laser projection with 3D capability and Dolby Digital 7.1 surround sound including the Fidelio system for the hard of hearing.

All of the screens at the new facility will be wheelchair-accessible and it will also have subtitled screenings. The venue will show the latest blockbuster and independent films, in addition to screenings of opera, ballet and theatrical productions.

Arc Cinema spokesman Brian Gilligan said: “We are delighted to be bringing an Arc Cinema to Peterhead and being part of the town’s regeneration. We are sure that the local community will love their new cinema.”

“Fans of our existing cinemas really appreciate the fact that we offer a luxurious VIP experience, but we only charge standard cinema prices, and we think that unique combination is perfectly suited to Peterhead.”

The company is currently looking to hire a new manager and the new facility will bring around 15 new jobs to Peterhead.

Tickets for the remaining films at Peterhead Cinema are on sale at the reception and online. The last screening on December 21 will be Frozen 2.
