A Macduff teenager who stole a safe and its £300 contents from his parents on Christmas Day has been placed under social work supervision.

Banff Sheriff Court heard there were a number of cheques inside, together with cash, credit and debit cards and keys, before Ryan Dawson struck.

Fiscal depute Paul Jamieson said: “On December 29, when his father went to get an item, he found the safe was gone and reported it to the police.”

When arrested, Dawson admitted he’d stolen the safe and contents. The court was told £190 of the £300 in cash within had since been recovered.

Dawson, 19, pleaded guilty to theft and also admitted assaulting a woman on December 29, 2018 and shouting, swearing and kicking her door on November 17, 2019.

In the first incident, he grabbed her by her arm, pinned it to her body and pushed her to the ground, bruising her shoulder.

Then, in November 2019, he turned up at her home uninvited and shouted and swore before kicking-in a panel of her wooden door.

Defence agent Debbie Wilson said: “I think there’s an element of immaturity and lack of understanding here but I don’t know how we can help advance a sense of maturity.

“He is now back living with his parents, but they have said they still don’t trust him.”

Sheriff Robert McDonald signed Dawson up to the Caledonian system – a behaviour programme for men convicted of domestic abuse offences as well as providing support for the victim.

He told him: “You do actually have to attend the sessions and do the homework that may be given to you.

“If not the matter will be brought back to the court and I’ll deal with you another way.”
