A man remains in a serious condition in hospital following a gas explosion at a property in Fraserburgh.

Police were called to a block of flats on Moray Road at Watermill Road in the town around 12.10pm on Friday after reports of an explosion.

A cordon remained in place as investigations continued, although a police spokesman yesterday confirmed it was not being treated as suspicious.

Following the blast, there were large scorch marks on the front of the building. Moray Road remains closed between Watermill Road and Kinnaird Road as a precaution due to the extensive damage which was caused to the building.

The blast also blew out the glass and fixtures from several windows which have subsequently been boarded up.

One man, aged 32, remains at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in a serious, but non-life threatening condition.

Members of the community gathered on the street on Friday after hearing a large bang. As smoke was pouring out of the windows, one neighbour described it “as complete and utter mayhem.”

Bystanders feared the building would collapse or require demolition after a large crack appeared on the outer surface.

The fire was suspected to have been caused by a gas leak. However, gas network SGN confirmed  it was “not related” to its network.

Brian Topping, councillor for Fraserburgh and District, said: “I was totally shocked to hear about this incident. Regardless of how it happened, I wish the person involved a full recovery and my thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”

Councillor Charles Buchan said: “It’s very worrying thing to have happened, people have to take care with gas and I just hope the gentleman has a full recovery.

“My thoughts are with his friends and family at this time and I would also like to thank the fire service and the police for responding to this incident so quickly.”

The police spokesman said: “The local community are thanked for their cooperation at this time.”
