Youngster inspired to make castle safety poster after dog dies at cliffs

A seven-year-old boy has made a safety poster to warn dog walkers of the dangers of the cliffs at an Aberdeenshire castle.

Liam Emlay, from Cruden Bay, has been praised by coastguards for his efforts to raise awareness of the problem at Slains Castle.

It comes after a dog recently died after falling from the cliffs while jumping through the ruined castle’s windows.

Liam, whose mum Louise is a volunteer coastguard, created the poster as part of a homeschooling project after she told him about the incident.

His poster has four safety messages: avoid getting caught by the tide, avoid slippery, unstable rocks, don’t climb up cliffs, and be careful in sea caves.

Miss Emlay said: “The poster was all his idea, he drew himself with one of our dogs. He loves animals and the news of the dog falling from the cliff is something he was concerned about.”

Senior coastal operations officer Calum Christie was delighted to recieve Liam’s poster and said: “It is great that young people can understand the risks where they live and can share them in this way.

“We will be copying and laminating Liam’s picture and will display it at the castle and surrounding paths.”
