A north-east amateur sports team has marked a Scottish rugby star’s milestone birthday with a fundraiser.
Banff RFC planned their annual fundraising It’s a Knock Out event for July 4 to coincide with former Scottish rugby union player Doddie Weir’s 50th birthday.
But the team were forced to cancel the event due to Covid-19 restrictions, and decided to raise money in other ways – such as raffles, auctions and collections from earlier matches.
In total, they raised £500 for the My Name’s Doddie Foundation, which was set in 2017 to help those living with MND following Mr Weir’s own diagnosis.
Banff RFC representative Bob Philips said: “The club’s efforts to raise funds are in acknowledgement of Doddie, a fantastic ambassador for rugby and a genuinely nice guy.
“We send him our best wishes for his 50th birthday and every success for his ongoing fundraising efforts towards motor neuron disease research.”
