Tractor run gives welcome boost to local causes

A noisy and colourful cavalcade of vintage vehicles which wound its way through the north-east countryside earlier this summer has made thousands of pounds for local charities.

The annual Buchan Vintage Tractor Run, which took place at the end of April, raised a record £10,000.

The money has been divided between the Buchan Renal Unit at Peterhead Hospital and the charity Clan (Cancer Link Aberdeen and North).

Nearly 100 classic workhorses, some dating back to the 1940s, set off from Fetterangus and made their way through Strichen, Riding Hill and Balearn School.

As tradition has it, all participants stopped for a spot of lunch at the Ban Car Hotel in Lonmay, before making their way back to Fetterangus.

Scores of residents lined the streets to cheer on the procession.

Organiser Doug Nicol said: “We had a great day, with over 90 tractors taking part.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the tractor drivers and their sponsors who have helped make this event so successful.”

He said that since the run started 14 years ago, more than £75,000 had been raised for a range of good causes.

The hugely popular event started life as an idea by Mr Nicol and fellow vintage vehicle enthusiast Bill Elliot, from Macduff.

The first outing was so successful that it was decided to use the event to raise cash for charities.

Among those which have benefited in the past include the National Asthma Campaign, the Crossroads Caring for Carers group and Peterhead’s Willowbank Centre, which caters for people with learning difficulties.

One of this year’s beneficiaries, the Buchan Renal Unit, opened its doors in 1997 and has expanded over the years.
