Traditional boating skills remembered in Rosehearty

The traditions of boat building and sailing were remembered at the weekend as the Rosehearty Community Boat Club held their most successful harbour event to date.

Since its launch in 2004, the club has set about resurrecting traditional boating skills and has continued to grow thanks to National Lottery funding and generous local donations.

At Saturday’s event – which offered visitors a whole host of local seafood and home bakes as well as an exhibition of the club’s boats – more than £3,000 was raised.

Club secretary Graham Souter said: “It was a huge success. Last year we raised £2,200 so this was fantastic.

“It’s a tribute to the people of Rosehearty and their generosity that so much money was raised.”

Earlier this year the club picked up more than £8,700 of funding from the Lottery, money they used to invest in a safety boat.

Mr Souter added: “Safety is a priority when we’re starting young people off. Now that we have our new safety boat we can allow young people more freedom on the water.”

Going forwards, Mr Souter and the rest of the club members are looking to convert an old public toilet block near the harbour into a clubhouse. Aberdeenshire Council has offered to sell the structure for £1.

“In order to do the work we’re going to have to spend a lot of money, but the money we raised on Saturday will go a long way towards that.”
