Police are hunting for a man who robbed a north-east shop in the early hours of New Year’s Day – wearing socks on his hands.

The incident happened at the Scotmid store in Macduff’s Duff Street.

At 12.07am, while revellers across the north-east were celebrating Hogmanay, the suspect stole money, and caused more than £100 of damage.

Last night a Police Scotland spokesman said: “The theft is believed to have happened at 12.07am on Thursday, January 1.

“The items stolen are valued at a mid two figure sum, while there was a low three figure sum of damage.

“The suspect is described as wearing a grey t-shirt over the top of a green hooded jacket and socks on his hands.”

As news of the bizarre beak-in emerged, one neighbour told the Press and Journal she was “saddened” her quiet seaside town was home to thieves.

Lianne Winton, who lives on in Duff Street, said: “I find Macduff to be a friendly place and for some mindless silly person to break in to a shop for a mere £50, you just wonder why?

“I hope that whoever these people are that feel the need to vandalise the shops for such a small amount of cash are caught.”

Miss Winton added: “The person was likely drunk or on drugs and using sock to imitate gloves. The silly so and so.”

The manager of Scotmid’s Macduff store declined to comment last night.
