North-east men told ‘grow-up’ after Christmas Eve brawl

Craig Black and Mark Skene leave court

Two north-east men have been fined in court for their part in a Christmas Eve brawl and told to “grow up” by a sheriff.

Craig Black, 22, and Mark Skene, 21, appeared at Banff Sheriff Court yesterday charged with assaulting Jamie Johnston in Macduff in the early hours of December 24.

Black, of 32 Clunie Street, Banff, was also charged with assaulting Mr Johnston’s brother, Luke.

They both plead guilty to the assaults.

Depute Fiscal Colin Neilson said that the pair had been in a pub on Skene Street when Skene took offence at something said between an unnamed witness and Luke Johnston.

A chase took place between the pair until Black punched Luke Johnston in the face before turning and assaulting his brother.

Skene, whose address was given as Liberty Farm, New Pitsligo, was also accused of punching Jamie Johnston “repeatedly” on the head and body.

Mr Neilson said: “The accused, Craig Black, was pulled away by another witness and, as he was being pulled back, Jamie Johnston managed to run away.

“There was a slight redness to Jamie Johnston’s face and scratches to his arms which he believes is from when he fell to the ground.”

Defence agent Stuart Beveridge represented both of the accused in court.

He said the pair had since met with their victims and “shook hands” on the matter.

“They had all been socialising in the pub together,” he explained.

“It turned into pushing and shoving and turned into a fight between the two of them and the two brothers. They’ve spoken about it and shaken hands.”

They were each fined £300 for the attack and warned by

Sheriff Philip Mann fined them each £300 and told them it was time to “grow up”.

Sheriff Mann said: “Mr Black, you’ve got a record and you really can’t afford to be appearing in court. You’re fortunate there’s no serious injury in this occasion.

“Mr Skene, you don’t have a record for violence, but the reasons made to Mr Black applies to you”

They will pay the fines back in installments of £20 per month.
