The remaking of one of Scotland’s most iconic movies is underway in a north-east village.

Cameras began rolling in the fishing village of Portsoy for the second retelling of Compton Mackenzie’s Whisky Galore.

Rab C Nesbitt star Gregor Fisher was among the actors to be seen getting into the spirit in period dress at the Aberdeenshire location.

A small boat could also be seen being rowed ashore laden with crates.

The 1947 novel was inspired by the true story of the SS Politician which sank off Eriskay, in the Outer Hebrides, in 1941.

In the book, residents of the fictional islands of Great Todday and Little Todday attempt to pilfer 50,000 cases of whisky from the SS Cabinet Minister which is wrecked on the islands.

The original black and white movie, staring Gordon Jackson and James Robertson Justice, was filmed on Barra during a wet summer in 1948 and released the following year.

It was a huge success.

The remake, directed by Gillies MacKinnon – best-known for directing gang movie Small Faces – will be a modern adaptation, filmed in colour.

Comedian Eddie Izzard is also tipped to be playing a part.

The location is just along the coast from Pennan which was the setting for another famous Scottish movie, Local Hero, in 1983.

The Banffshire coast has proved a popular draw for filmmakers with Macduff selected as the perfect backdrop for Stonemouth last year.

The two-part drama was based on one of Scots author Iain Banks’ final works before he died of cancer in 2013.
