A north-east social worker has been struck off after lying to his employer about driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Adrian Boyne, from Newburgh, was removed from the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) register on Saturday following a tribunal earlier this month.

The hearing found that on November 28, 2012 Mr Boyne had been caught driving his car on Tullikera Road in Lonmay with 112microgrammes of alcohol in 100mls of breath, exceeding the legal limit which was then 35mgs in 100mls of breath.

In a report, the SSSC said: “By driving a motor vehicle after consuming so much alcohol that the alcohol in his breath exceeded the prescribed limit, the registrant demonstrated a disregard for the law and a breach of the trust and confidence placed in social service workers.

“The registrant’s behaviour demonstrated a disregard for the safety of others and put other motorists, pedestrians and passengers lives at risk.

“Such disregard of the risk to the safety of others is incompatible with suitability to work on social services.”

He was also found to have mislead the SSSC when telling the organisation how much alcohol he had actually consumed before to driving.

He claimed he had drank half a bottle of vodka, when in fact he had actually consumed an unknown amount.

The report added: “The registrant’s attempt to mislead the council about the extent of his wrongdoings constitutes dishonesty.

“The registrant failed to demonstrate the honest and integrity that is expected of and required of social service workers.”

The SSSC added that Mr Boyne had fully cooperated with their investigation, acknowledged his wrongdoings and expressed regret at his actions.
