A motorist has died in hospital after a horrific car crash at the weekend.

Alistair Wilson died on Monday after a two-car crash on the A90 Aberdeen to Ellon road, near the Murcar roundabout, on Saturday.

The 51-year-old, of New Pitsligo, was well-known in the community and last night local councillors expressed their sympathy.

Fellow New Pitsligo resident and local councillor Stuart Pratt, who knew Mr Wilson as a boy, last night said that his thoughts were with the Wilson family.

“I knew him as a boy, and I worked with his dad when I was a plumber many, many years ago,” he said. “Obviously, my thoughts are with his family.”

Councillor Lenny Pirie from Strichen said he knew Mr Wilson’s late father.

He said: “I’m so sorry to hear this. I knew his family in New Pitsligo, and I knew Mr Wilson.

“I’d like to send my condolences to all Mr Wilson’s family. This is so sad. There have been too many crashes on our roads lately.”

Mr Wilson was driving a grey Vauxhall Astra when it collided with a silver BMW 320 at the B&Q roundabout at about 9.30am on Saturday.

He and another man were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

The carriageway near the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC) was closed for more than seven hours following the smash.

Parts of the Astra were seen strewn across both northbound lanes, while the BMW had veered off the side of the road and mounted the pavement.

Fire crews were called out and used hydraulic gear to free both drivers from their vehicles.

Police inquiries into the incident are ongoing, and investigating officers have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
