North-east councillors could give the green light to a multi-million-pound package of road repairs when they meet today.

Members of the Buchan area committee will be asked to consider and approve maintenance proposals for routes in the region.

The £4million spending package includes more than £200,000 for resurfacing works and nearly £60,000 for new road signs.

In his report to committee members, Aberdeenshire’s infrastructure boss Stephen Archer said: “A good road infrastructure is vital for a rural authority like Aberdeenshire and an efficient and effective maintenance programme is essential.

“Budgets have now been allocated on a priority and needs basis, using the normal survey and assessment techniques for the various categories of work.

“This ensures that the monies are used in the most cost-effective way on an Aberdeenshire-wide basis and in accordance with the approved policy on road inspections and assessments.”

Mr Archer added that the work would be carried out by a mixture of council staff and outside contractors, following a tendering process.

The raft of proposed repairs include upgrades to pavements, lighting and signage as well as extensive resurfacing.

More than £150,000 has been earmarked for “energy reduction” measures as the authority battles to meet carbon emission targets.

These measures include reducing the wattage of streetlights across the region.

A further £588,000 will also be set aside for the winter maintenance and emergency programme, which is primarily used to pay for gritting and snow clearing during the winter.

An estimated £26.8million will be spent on Aberdeenshire’s 3,490 miles of roads in the next year.

The Buchan area committee is expected to approve the multi-million-pound local road repair package when they meet in Peterhead.
